Recently I started using and liking the hashtag #unlikelyhikers ...I think I identified as an unlikely hiker because I haven’t seen too many of me out there on the trails. Perception of ones identity is so easily influenced by societies’ norms that I believed I was an unlikely hiker. Instagram also helped to validate that erroneous perception of myself... All because I don’t quite fit into the thigh gap crew or have the “right” aesthetic. Recently though I had an epiphany: HOW COULD I BE AN UNLIKELY HIKER??? My Mayan ancestors existed all throughout Central America and thrived outdoors. They were able to tame the wild just enough to coexist within its confines. Let’s not even go so far back into the past. My own father was known to hike high into the mountains in #elsalvador to bring back nutrients the mountains provided. So when I step foot on the next trail amidst the desert/trees/jungle/forest/mountain or wherever it may be... I have to remind myself that it’s in my blood to venture outdoors. It’s in my blood to hike.
